Optimizing Vapor Capture and Emissions Profiles at Upstream Production Sites

Data from field trials and other installations, comparing gas sales volumes using a traditional VRT configuration to a new design, indicate that the towers typically only capture between 60% and 80% of the vapors arising downstream of phase separation—an efficiency lower than simulation models suggest. A white paper we have published identifies the root causes of these inefficiencies and describes how an alternative approach using VRU compressors and vapor recovery systems captures the remaining 20% to 40% of the total vapor stream while boosting liquid volumes recovered. An additional benefit of the alternative design is a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and near elimination of routine flaring. In addition, active operational control of tank pressure reduces the risk of tank vent emissions from reliefs and hatches.
